This
region stretches north from Citrusdal (citrus fruit farming country) to
Namakwaland in the far North. The Main Route through this part of the
Western Cape is known as the N7.
A natural boundary formed by part of the Cape Fold Belt includes mountain ranges such as the Cederberg, Gifberg, Matsikamma and Bokkeveld mountains. These mountains have fantastic rock formations. The region has a unique beauty of its own. The name of this region is derived from the elephants that where spotted here over 300 years ago by the first pioneers who explored the region. Attractions abound. There is the Cederbeg Wilderness area, San rock paintings, the Clanwilliam and Bulshoek dams, the Bird Island at Lamberts Bay, the Olifants River Wine Route which is producing some fine white and red wines from this region. You can roam through the old missionary towns and stations and explore the region's historical heritage or roam through the fynbos. Savour some tea from the unique Rooibos Tea plant, or visit the succulent nursery and Knersvlakte at Vanrhynsdorp as well as its wealth of flora. The coast is well known for it's lovely fresh seafood dishes. |
